How a Wisdom Tooth Can Cause a Crooked Smile

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Fairfax, VA

A wisdom tooth is one of the last sets of molars to erupt. Wisdom teeth are the furthest teeth at the back of the mouth and they should have erupted by the time a person is 25. Wisdom teeth are the hardest teeth to reach and that makes them harder to clean. As a result, they are more vulnerable to tooth decay and gum disease.

A wisdom tooth rarely has an effect on opposing teeth, but it can push on some of the adjacent teeth if it is impacted. An impacted tooth is one that does not erupt as it should. It can become stuck in the gums or grow in a way that causes it to exert pressure on adjacent teeth, moving them out of their proper alignment.

Addressing a problematic wisdom tooth

Wisdom teeth are the only set of teeth that are not necessary. They are a relic from evolution. Most dentists do not have a problem with a person keeping their wisdom teeth if they are not causing any issues, but extractions are the standard treatment when any problem arises with a wisdom tooth.

Its location in the back of the mouth increases its risk of tooth decay and gum disease, so there is no point in repairing a damaged tooth only for it to develop another problem down the road. Since wisdom teeth are not needed, there is no need to replace one with a prosthetic like an implant after it has been extracted. Extractions are the go-to solution for wisdom teeth that are impacted. Pulling such teeth out prevents them from harming surrounding teeth.

What to expect during an extraction

Local or general anesthetics are usually used during the extraction of teeth. The two main types of extractions are surgical and simple. Simple extractions are performed when a dentist can grab the affected tooth with a pair of forceps and pull it out. Surgical extractions are performed when the dentist needs to make an incision or cut the tooth into smaller pieces to better access it.

Patients should expect to deal with some bleeding and discomfort after the treatment when the anesthetic wears out. Pain killers are often prescribed to help manage this discomfort. Patients should get lots of rest after getting an extraction to help speed up the process. Other ways to make recovery after a wisdom tooth is extracted easier include:

  • Eat only liquid and soft foods for the first few days after an extraction
  • Do not brush, floss, or use mouthwash for the first few days after the extraction
  • Use saltwater to clean the mouth after meals. It is an effective way to kill oral bacteria
  • Do not touch or otherwise aggravate the socket of the extracted tooth
  • Avoid using straws or anything that requires sucking
  • Avoid spicy and hot foods during recovery
